Conversations with Creatives: Jarrod Lawson & JSWISS

A new (potentially semi-regular) interview series

Hi friends. OK so, something slightly different. See, sometimes, I’m asked to highlight someone — or I just want to shine some light on someone — who just doesn’t neatly fit into my “Hip Hop Can Save America!” ecosystem.

It’s why one of my prior podcasts was called “Conversations With Creatives…” It allowed me to go outside my HHCSA box every now and then.

Well, it’s back. Sort of. Exclusively dropping first only here, on my Substack. This one features singer songwriter Jarrod Lawson, and JSWISS, an MC who I happen to have also covered throughout the years.

Let me know your thoughts about this new side quest. I can’t say how often it will happen — Lord knows I have enough to do already — but it gives me a nice option when the vibes are right.

Appreciate you. Enjoy the video.

Our friends at Shatter the Standards reviewed Jarrod’s new album Just Let it a few days ago as well.

Album Review: Just Let It by Jarrod Lawson
The keyboards on Just Let It sit in your chest. Jarrod Lawson, who debuted at 37 after years of laying stone for a living, produced the whole record himself, and the first thing you notice is how good the band sounds—thick, easy, every chord given time to ring before the next one drops in. His falsetto rides above the arrang…
