CFPs: Global Conference on Hip Hop Education & more
Info on upcoming conferences at Rutgers, Howard, Cal State and others
📝 FROM THE E-DESK OF MANNY FACES
Hey there friends, neighbors, supporters and haters! I’m back with another quick-ish post to let you know about some upcoming academic-flavored Hip Hop events and conferences, including one I’m co-chairing! 🎉
(IF YOU KNOW OF ANY SUCH EVENTS, PLEASE REPLY TO THIS EMAIL AND SEND INFO. I’LL BE HAPPY TO SHARE.)
📢 Also, we are actively seeking financial sponsors for this newsletter and the next season of Hip-Hop Can Save America!, aka, ‘the world’s most important Hip Hop podcast.’ If you’re reading this, so are thousands of others. Please email me directly to find out more, manny@hiphopadvocacy.org.
🗣️ I’m also booking keynote talks, workshops, and other related appearances (Hip Hop of course, but also podcasting). Visit www.mannyfaces.com for more info, or email me directly at manny@mannyfaces.com and let’s talk about talking.
🙏 You can also show love at www.pateron.com/mannyfaces. Remember, I am fully independent and unaffiliated with any major organization — a blessing and a curse — but for the price of a latte each month, you can really help me cover some of the costs I incur doing this work.
You can also upgrade to a paid Substack membership and the link below, or, pay it forward by sharing the newsletter to your networks.
OK. Enough of all that. Here’s what’s coming up, in chronological order.

2023 Global Conference on Hip Hop Education
November 8-11, 2023 - California State University, Long Beach (and remote)
After holding down online hosting and tech juggling duties for the past two years, I am truly honored to have been asked to co-chair this year’s conference, along with the inimitable Dr. Tasha Iglesias, president of host organization, Hip Hop Association of Advancement and Education.
This year’s conference will expand upon our previous theme, which focused on the foundation of the culture and explore how this culture both migrated out of New York to states like California (i.e. the Golden State), and into popular culture and academia in the late 1970s to mid-1980s. Our conference theme “From the Golden Era to the Golden State,” will guide us as we explore the foundation of this culture, understand what brought about an increase in cultural diffusion, and how lessons learned from the golden era can inform current pedagogies, interventions, research, scholarship and practices.
The Call for Proposals is now open, and will remain open until June 4, 2023.
